Colposcopy
Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure in which the doctor uses a special optical instrument – a colposcope – to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva in detail. This method makes it possible to detect abnormalities and precancerous conditions early, which significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. Colposcopy is especially recommended if abnormal Pap test results or pathological changes are suspected.

What does a colposcopy show
- Detection of cervical dysplasia, precancerous changes, and early forms of cancer.
- Assessment of the nature and extent of pathological changes in the cervix after detecting abnormal Pap test results.
- Identification of inflammatory diseases, infections including HPV (human papillomavirus), and other conditions that affect female genital health.
Indications for colposcopy
- The presence of abnormal Pap test results, which may indicate the presence of precancerous changes or cervical cancer.
- Identification and evaluation of areas with abnormal changes found on pelvic examination.
- Vaginal bleeding or pelvic pain.
- There is a need for dynamic observation and monitoring of chronic inflammatory processes and diagnosed dysplasia.
- Plan or monitor treatment for viral infections, including those caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).
Importantly! Before colposcopy, you must provide your doctor with a detailed medical history, including information about your menstrual cycle, pregnancies, and previous gynecological surgeries and treatments. A referral from a doctor will help determine the purpose of the study and select the most appropriate imaging methods. This approach provides the most accurate and informative diagnosis, allowing for the timely detection and prevention of serious diseases.
Preparation for the procedure
- It is best to perform a colposcopy in the middle of the menstrual cycle, a week after the end of menstruation, to ensure the best visibility of the cervix.
- It is recommended to abstain from sexual activity for 24-48 hours before the procedure.
- The use of vaginal creams, gels, suppositories, and douching should be avoided 2-3 days before the procedure.
- Do not use tampons 24-48 hours before the examination.
- It is advisable to avoid pelvic examinations, vaginal ultrasound or biopsies a few days before colposcopy.
- It is important to inform your doctor about any gynecological diseases, allergies, and medications you are taking.
- If you have previous Pap test results or other medical documents related to your cervical condition, you should bring them.
Importantly! When making an appointment for a colposcopy procedure, the EasyMed manager will provide detailed information about the preparation for the procedure and clarify all the necessary details to guarantee the comfort and accuracy of the diagnosis.
How is colposcopy performed?
The patient is seated in a gynecological chair. The doctor may use a special instrument called a vaginal speculum for better access and viewing of the cervix. The doctor inserts a colposcope with a lighting and imaging device that allows you to enlarge the cervical area for a detailed examination.
The colposcopy usually takes 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the need for additional manipulations, such as a biopsy (taking a small tissue sample for analysis).
If the doctor finds suspicious areas, a biopsy may be performed. This may cause slight discomfort or a short-term burning sensation.
After the examination and all the necessary manipulations, the patient can immediately get dressed and leave the clinic.
After the procedure, the doctor will discuss the observations and next steps with the patient, such as waiting for the biopsy results, if any. The biopsy results are usually available within a few days or weeks. The patient may be given recommendations for care after the procedure, especially if a biopsy has been performed.
Contraindications to the procedure
- Acute phase of inflammatory diseases of the genitals: The presence of acute infections in the vagina and cervix can distort the results and increase the risk of spreading infection.
- Menstruation: Colposcopy during menstruation is difficult due to the reduced visibility of the cervix. It is better to schedule the procedure immediately after the end of the menstrual cycle.
- Pregnancy: During pregnancy, colposcopy should be performed with caution, especially in the first trimester, and only when strictly indicated to avoid risk to the fetus.
- Recent cervical surgery: After cervical surgery, it is necessary to allow time for healing before colposcopy.
Importantly! When making an appointment for a colposcopy procedure through EasyMed, the manager will provide full information about the contraindications and help determine whether this procedure suits a particular case. Discussing all medical conditions and recent procedures with your doctor before scheduling a colposcopy is always important.
Safety of the procedure
Colposcopy is a safe and minimally invasive procedure widely used in gynecology to diagnose cervical conditions. The main risks associated with colposcopy are minimal. They may include short-term discomfort during instrument insertion or light bleeding, especially if a biopsy is performed. In rare cases, an inflammatory process may develop.
The frequency of colposcopy is determined individually depending on medical indications, such as abnormal Pap test results or the presence of symptoms that require further evaluation. For most women, colposcopy is not required regularly, but it is prescribed according to strict doctor indications.
