Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is one of the most innovative non-invasive techniques in medical diagnosis. This method combines the advantages of traditional ultrasound and endoscopy, allowing you to obtain highly detailed images of internal organs and structures, especially in the gastrointestinal tract and surrounding tissues.

Indications for endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
- Diagnosis of pancreatic diseases: Determination of the nature of formations in the pancreas (cysts, tumors), diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis and its complications, identification of microcalcifications that other methods can miss.
- Examination of the gastrointestinal tract: Evaluation of the wall of the stomach and intestines to diagnose inflammatory disease tumors, study of submucosal formations, and search for causes of unclear bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract.
- Evaluation of the biliary system: Diagnosis of diseases of the biliary tract and gallbladder, investigation of the causes of obstructive jaundice, and detection of small stones in the bile ducts.
- Mediastinal examination: Evaluation of mediastinal lymph nodes to detect metastases diagnosis of mediastinal tumors and cysts.
Importantly! Endoscopic ultrasound not only allows you to visualize organs but also to perform an ultrasound-guided biopsy for accurate diagnosis. This is especially valuable in cases where it is necessary to determine the nature of the formations – benign or malignant.
Preparation for the procedure
- Diet before the procedure: 24-48 hours before the examination, a light diet is recommended, avoiding foods that cause gas and make it difficult to visualize (e.g., legumes, fresh vegetables and fruits, brown bread). In the last 6-8 hours before EUS, it is necessary to completely abstain from eating.
- Drinking regimen: Water can be drunk as usual for up to 2 hours before the procedure. Alcoholic and carbonated beverages should be avoided 24 hours before the examination.
- Medication preparation: Sometimes, your doctor may prescribe medications to reduce gas or cleansers.
Importantly! EasyMed will additionally notify the patient of the necessary actions and restrictions before the procedure
before the EUS.
Preparing for EUS is not only a matter of comfort but also a matter of safety. Following all the recommendations helps to avoid complications such as the aspiration of fluids or food. It is also imperative to notify your doctor of any medications you are taking, especially blood thinners, as they may need to be adjusted before the procedure.
How is an endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) performed?
- Patient preparation: The patient is asked to lie on his side. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia to reduce discomfort when the endoscope is inserted. Sometimes, sedation may be used to keep the patient relaxed and comfortable with the procedure.
- Endoscope insertion: The doctor gently inserts the endoscope through the mouth and guides it into the stomach and then into the duodenum or other study area. An ultrasound sensor is installed at the end of the endoscope, which allows you to obtain high-quality images of the internal structures.
- Ultrasound: The doctor carefully examines the area of interest, assessing the condition of the organs and the presence of neoplasms, cysts, or other abnormalities.
- Biopsy if necessary: The doctor may perform a biopsy if suspicious areas are found during the examination. To do this, a special instrument is inserted through the endoscope channel. The obtained tissue samples are sent for histological examination to determine their nature.
Importantly! There may be a feeling of discomfort when performing EUS, but it should not be too intense. You should inform your doctor if you are bothered by pain during and after the procedure.
Diagnostic Capabilities of Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
- Assessment of gastrointestinal pathologies: Detailed visualization of the walls of the stomach intestines, eliminating the need for more invasive procedures, determining the nature and depth of penetration of tumor processes, which is critical for treatment planning.
- Detailed examination of the pancreas: Detection of small tumors, cysts, and other neoplasms that may go unnoticed by different types of examinations, as well as evaluation of inflammatory processes and their impact on surrounding tissues.
- Examination of the biliary system and liver: Accurately determine the causes of bile duct obstruction, including detecting small stones or strictures, assessing the condition of the liver tissues, and detecting pathological changes.
- Evaluation of the lymphatic system and mediastinum: Identifying enlarged lymph nodes and detecting metastases.
- Analysis of abnormalities in the mediastinal region, including tumors and cysts.
Importantly! EUS is an important diagnostic tool for planning surgery and other treatments. Still, sometimes additional diagnostic tests may be required.
Contraindications to Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
Although EUS is a safe and effective procedure, there are certain conditions in which it can be undesirable or even dangerous. Understanding these contraindications helps prevent possible complications and ensures patient safety.
- Severe cardiovascular disease: Severe heart rhythm disorders, uncontrolled angina, and recent myocardial infarction can significantly increase the risk of complications during the procedure.
- Severe respiratory disease: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or other serious pulmonary pathologies can be exacerbated by the need for prolonged horizontal posture and potential exposure to anesthetics.
- Active infectious diseases, Especially if they affect the respiratory tract, as this can increase the risk of transmission and complicate the procedure.
- Bleeding problems: The presence of bleeding or bleeding disorders can increase the risk of bleeding, especially if a biopsy is to be taken during EUS.
- Severe diseases of the esophagus: Stenosis and extensive varicose veins of the esophagus can make inserting an endoscope dangerous or impossible.
Importantly! Before prescribing EUS, the doctor should thoroughly study the patient’s medical history, taking into account all existing diseases and current health conditions. In some cases, it may be necessary to consult with specialists in other fields of medicine.
