According to a study by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the flu vaccine reduced the risk of hospitalization in the Southern Hemisphere by 52% between March and September 2023. This experience, taking into account the early onset of biological winter in the countries of the Southern Hemisphere, allows us to assess the possible effectiveness of vaccination for Israel as well.
The study looked at data from Latin America and the Caribbean. There was a 52% reduction in flu-related complications and hospitalizations. These results are based on information from 2780 patients from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay who were hospitalized between March 27 and July 9, 2023.
According to the researchers, the findings point to the high efficacy of flu vaccines in preventing hospitalizations, especially among children, the elderly, and patients with chronic diseases. This confirms the importance of mass vaccination of the population.
Professor Avishai Elis, Chairman of the Association of Internal Medicine and Head of the Department at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, stressed the importance of this study for Israel: “Respiratory diseases, including influenza, are on the list of leading causes of hospitalization in Israel. Vaccination is a key tool to prevent complications and preserve public health.”
Based on research findings and recommendations from medical experts, seasonal flu vaccination is becoming a public health priority in Israel.
