What does a biopsy show?
The main use of biopsy is:
- Cancer diagnosis: A biopsy can determine the type of tumors and the degree of aggressiveness.
- Treatment monitoring: Analysis of biopsy specimens helps doctors assess the effectiveness of therapy and adjust the treatment process.
- Detection of infections and inflammatory processes: A biopsy helps diagnose infectious and inflammatory diseases affecting tissues and organs.
Indications
Indications for biopsy include:
- Tumors: To determine whether the neoplasms are benign or malignant.
- Inflammatory processes: Clarification of the diagnosis of chronic inflammation or infectious diseases.
- Skin pathologies: Diagnosing dermatological conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, and skin tumors.
- Diseases of internal organs: If pathologies of the liver, kidneys, lungs, and other organs are suspected.
- Examination of glandular masses: For example, in case of nodules in the thyroid gland or suspected breast diseases.
Importantly! To make an appointment for a biopsy, you must have a doctor’s referral that confirms the procedure’s clinical necessity. This helps EasyMed specialists determine the optimal type of biopsy and prepare the patient for the procedure. Thanks to the responsiveness of EasyMed, patients can quickly receive the necessary examination, which is a key factor for timely diagnosis and treatment.
Preparation for the procedure
- The patient must provide a complete medical history, including the results of previous tests and examinations and details of current medical conditions and medications.
- Particular attention should be paid to reporting the use of anticoagulants (blood thinners) and antiplatelet agents, as these may affect the risk of bleeding during and after the procedure.
- Your doctor may recommend temporarily stopping certain medications that affect blood clotting a few days before your biopsy.
- Depending on the type of biopsy, it may be necessary to follow special instructions, such as abstaining from food and drink before the procedure.
- The patient may be advised to avoid strenuous physical activity on the eve of the procedure.
- It is important to be psychologically prepared for the procedure and be aware of its goals and possible risks.
Importantly! A referral from a doctor must be obtained before the biopsy procedure. EasyMed clients will be further informed of all the necessary steps and restrictions before the procedure. This will help ensure the safety and accuracy of the diagnostic process.
Biopsy Process
The biopsy begins with assessing the area from which the tissue sample will be taken. The doctor may use ultrasound or other imaging techniques to pinpoint the location of the biopsy. Depending on the area, the patient will be asked to lie down or take a comfortable position.
Local anesthesia is used to reduce discomfort at the biopsy site. Using a special needle instrument, the doctor carefully extracts a tissue sample.
The biopsy usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, but it can take longer depending on the location and complexity. After the biopsy, a sterile patch or sutures are placed on the sample site.
A short rest period in a medical facility under the supervision of medical staff is recommended.
The entire process can take several hours, including preparation, procedure, and rest afterward. The patient may need a companion to return home after the procedure.
Contraindications to the procedure
Absolute contraindications:
- Presence of severe bleeding disorders.
- Acute inflammatory or infectious disease at the biopsy site.
- The patient's general condition is severe.
Relative contraindications:
- Unstable heart condition or severe forms of hypertension.
- Chronic diseases in the exacerbation stage.
- Allergy to anesthetics.
Importantly! Additional information and clarifications will be provided by the EasyMed manager when making an appointment for the procedure.
Safety of the procedure
A biopsy is considered a relatively safe procedure. However, it comes with some risks, such as infections or bleeding at the site of the sample. In rare cases, pain or swelling may occur.
The frequency of biopsies is determined by clinical need, based on diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. A biopsy with clear medical indications is not recommended.
