Computed tomography angiography
Computed tomography Angiography (CTA) is a high-tech diagnostic technique that allows you to visualize blood vessels in various body parts, including arteries and veins in the brain, neck, thoracic and abdominal cavities. This procedure is especially important for detecting aneurysms, vascular diseases, stenosis, and other vascular pathologies.

What does CT angiography show?
Computed tomography (CT angiography) allows you to obtain detailed images of arteries and veins, thanks to which doctors can assess the condition of blood vessels and detect narrowing, blockages, aneurysms, and other abnormalities.
CT angiography is especially valuable in the following cases:
- Diagnosis of heart and coronary artery diseases, including atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease.
- Detection of aneurysms and other vascular defects that can lead to life-threatening conditions.
- Assessment of the condition of cerebral vessels, including for the diagnosis of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.
- Examination of peripheral vessels, including those of the extremities and abdomen, to detect blood clots and other pathologies.
Indications for CT angiography
Computed tomography (CT angiography) combines computed tomography with a contrast agent to image blood vessels in detail.
Indications for CT angiography include:
- Evaluation of arteries and veins, including detecting aneurysms, blood clots, and stenosis.
- Diagnosis of coronary diseases such as coronary heart disease.
- Preparation for vascular surgery, including stenting and bypass bypass.
- Assessment of the condition of blood vessels after surgery or trauma.
- Detection of inflammatory processes in blood vessels, such as vasculitis.
- Identification of sources of bleeding.
Importantly! Before the CT angiography procedure, it is important to provide the doctor with a complete medical history and a referral from the treating specialist. This helps diagnosticians take into account the individual characteristics of the patient and his medical history for a more accurate interpretation of the test results.
Preparation for the procedure
Preparing for a CT angiography involves several important steps to ensure the accuracy and safety of the procedure:
- Depending on the time of the procedure, it may be recommended to abstain from food for 4-6 hours before the examination.
- Patients are usually advised to limit fluid intake before the procedure, especially if a contrast agent is to be injected.
- All metal decorations and objects that may affect the quality of the image must be removed.
- It is important to provide the doctor with accessible medical records, including the results of previous tests.
- The patient should notify the doctor of their medical conditions and allergies, especially to iodine or contrast agents.
- In the case of a contrast agent, additional instructions may be given, such as prior abstinence from food and drink.
Importantly! The EasyMed team will provide detailed instructions and information on how to prepare for a CT angiography, ensuring the comfort and safety of the patient during the diagnostic process.
CT angiography process
The CT angiography procedure begins with the patient’s arrival at the medical facility and pre-registration. The patient may need to change into special hospital gowns and remove all metal objects to avoid image distortion. An important part of preparing for CT angiography is the injection of contrast through an intravenous catheter, which allows for better visualization of blood vessels.
After preparation, the patient lies down on the movable table of the CT scanner. It is important to remain still during the procedure to obtain clear images. The scanner makes various sounds during operation, and patients are sometimes offered earplugs for comfort.
The scanning process usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the complexity of the procedure. Once the scan is complete, the patient can leave the clinic unless further follow-up is required. The time it takes to recover from contrast injection can vary slightly. Still, usually, patients feel well enough to return to normal activities on the same day.
CT angiography with contrast medium
CT angiography with contrast is a key method for a detailed vascular system study. The injection of a contrast agent significantly improves vascular imaging, facilitating the diagnosis and evaluation of vascular diseases.
CT angiography with contrast is particularly useful in the following cases:
- Diagnosing aneurysms: The procedure allows you to accurately determine the location and size of aneurysms in the vessels, which is critical for treatment planning.
- Evaluation of vascular stenosis and occlusions: Contrast improves the visualization of narrow or blocked areas of blood vessels, helping to identify the causes of ischemia and other vascular disorders.
- Surgical planning: CT angiography with contrast provides important information about vascular anatomy before surgeries, including coronary artery bypass grafting or stenting.
Importantly! Before the procedure, informing the doctor about any allergies is necessary, especially to iodine-containing contrast agents. Although the contrast agent is usually well tolerated, it can cause an allergic reaction in rare cases. Patients are advised to increase their fluid intake after the procedure to remove the contrast from the body quickly.
Contraindications
Contraindications to computed tomography angiography (CTA) include both relative and absolute limitations.
Relative contraindications:
- Claustrophobia: May cause discomfort in the confined space of the scanner.
- Pregnancy: Especially in the first trimester, due to the possible risks to the fetus.
Absolute contraindications:
- Presence of pacemakers, neurostimulators, or other electronic devices.
- Severe allergy to iodine-containing contrast agents if they are to be used.
- Impaired renal function, as contrast agents are excreted through the renal system.
Importantly! Before scheduling a procedure through EasyMed, clients will be informed of all the requirements.
Safety of the procedure
Importantly! Before a CTA procedure, it is recommended to discuss all potential risks and benefits with your doctor and consider possible alternative diagnostic methods. EasyMed will provide you with detailed information and support every step of the way so you can make an informed decision.
