What does a CT scan of the chest show?
Computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest is widely used to detect, diagnose, and monitor various diseases of the heart, blood vessels, chest wall, and other structures of the chest cavity.
A CT scan of the chest is prescribed in the following cases:
- Evaluation and diagnosis of lung diseases, including pneumonia, tuberculosis, emphysema, and lung cancer.
- Examine the heart and large vessels, including the aorta, to detect aneurysms and other vascular abnormalities.
- Detection of neoplasms and metastases in the thoracic cavity.
- Diagnosing chest injuries and monitoring their treatment.
A CT scan of the chest is also used to plan surgeries and assess the effectiveness of treatment. Thanks to the high resolution of the images, CT contributes to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
Indications for a CT scan of the chest
- Diagnosing lung diseases, including pneumonia, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer.
- Assessment of the heart and large vessels condition, for example, if aortic aneurysms are suspected.
- Detection of pathologies such as lymphadenopathy or tumors.
- Diagnosis of chest injuries, including rib fractures and lung injuries.
- Search for metastases in a known malignant neoplasm.
Importantly! Before the procedure, patients are advised to provide a complete medical history and referral from the attending physician, which allows for a more accurate diagnosis and allows the radiologist to determine the most appropriate scan parameters, taking into account the individual characteristics of each patient.
Preparation for the procedure
- It is recommended to avoid eating for a few hours before the procedure, especially if a contrast agent is to be used.
- All metal objects, including jewelry, watches, and glasses, must be removed before scanning.
- The patient must provide all available medical information and the results of previous examinations.
- It is especially important to report any chronic illnesses, allergies, and medications you are taking.
- If a chest CT scan will be performed with contrast, special instructions must be followed, such as increasing fluid intake.
Importantly! Before the chest CT scan, EasyMed specialists will provide all the necessary information about the preparation and answer the patient’s questions to ensure comfort and safety during the procedure.
The process of performing a CT scan of the chest
The chest CT procedure begins with the patient’s arrival at the medical facility, where they undergo initial registration. The patient is given a hospital gown and asked to remove all metal objects so they do not affect the quality of the images.
If a contrast agent is to be used, it is administered intravenously.
Next, the patient lies down on the movable table of the CT scanner. During the scan, the table slowly moves inside the machine, which resembles a large ring. The patient needs to remain still and follow the instructions of the nursing staff.
The procedure itself takes from 10 to 30 minutes. The machine may make loud noises during the scan, but the process usually does not cause discomfort.
After the CT scan is completed, the patient can leave the clinic immediately if there are no instructions for additional follow-up. The results of the procedure are usually discussed with the treating physician.
CT scan of the chest with contrast medium
A chest CT scan with contrast is particularly recommended in the following cases:
- Assessment of the condition of the lungs and bronchi: Contrast helps in the detailed study of the structure of the lungs, the detection of tumors, inflammation, and other pathologies.
- Examination of the heart and large vessels: Effective for assessing the anatomy and function of the heart and detecting aneurysms or other vascular abnormalities.
- Diagnosis of mediastinitis: Allows the detection of mediastinal pathologies, including lymph nodes and thymus diseases.
Importantly! Before the procedure, informing the doctor about allergies is necessary, especially to iodine-containing contrast agents. The contrast agent is safe in most cases, but it can cause an allergic reaction. Side effects are usually minimal, and the contrast is quickly eliminated from the body. Increasing fluid intake after the procedure is recommended to speed up the comparison elimination.
Contraindications
Relative contraindications:
- Claustrophobia: Patients with a fear of confined spaces may experience discomfort during the procedure.
- Pregnancy: The use of CT scans in the first trimester of pregnancy is recommended only when necessary because of the risk of exposure to the developing fetus.
Absolute contraindications:
- Presence of a pacemaker or other electronic implants sensitive to radiation radiation.
- Severe allergy to iodine-containing contrast agents if their use is intended.
- Severe renal dysfunction, which the excretion of the contrast medium may exacerbate.
Importantly! By contacting EasyMed, customers will receive all the necessary information about the procedure and the accompanying restrictions.
Safety of the procedure
Importantly! Patients are advised to discuss all the possible risks and benefits of the procedure with their doctor. EasyMed will provide additional information and support at all stages of the diagnosis to ensure a comfortable and safe CT scan.
