Computed tomography urography
Computed tomography urography (CTU) is a detailed diagnostic method designed to assess the anatomy and function of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. This procedure is especially valuable for detecting the urological system's stones, tumors, and inflammatory processes.

What does CT urography show?
Computed tomography urography (CT urography) combines the capabilities of computed tomography with the injection of a contrast agent to improve the visualization of the urinary system.
CT urography is particularly useful in the following cases:
- Detection of kidney and urinary tract stones.
- Diagnosis of tumors in the kidneys, ureters, or bladder.
- Evaluation of structural abnormalities of the urinary tract.
- Study the causes of blood in the urine or other abnormal symptoms related to the urinary system.
CT urography provides doctors with detailed images to assess the anatomy and function of the urinary tract, which is important for accurate diagnosis and determining the appropriate treatment for urological diseases.
Indications for CT urography
Computed tomography urography (CT urography) combines computed tomography with a contrast agent to create clear images of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.
Indications for CT urography include:
- Diagnosis and evaluation of kidney and ureteral stones.
- Detection of tumors or neoplasms in the urinary tract.
- Assessment of structural abnormalities and congenital pathologies of the urinary system.
- Diagnosis of inflammatory processes such as pyelonephritis or urethritis.
- Assessment of the condition of the urinary tract after surgical interventions.
- Investigation of the causes of hematuria (blood in the urine).
Importantly! You should provide your doctor with a complete medical history and a referral from your healthcare professional before the procedure. This helps specialists consider the patient’s characteristics and medical history to interpret the results of CT urography accurately.
Preparation for the procedure
Preparing for a CT urography involves several key steps to ensure the safety and accuracy of the procedure:
- Patients are usually advised to abstain from food intake for 4 to 6 hours before the study and to limit fluid intake.
- All metal accessories and garments that may affect the quality of the images should be removed before the procedure.
- It is important to provide the doctor with all available medical records, including the results of previous tests.
- All current medical conditions, allergies, and medications should be told by your doctor, especially if you use a contrast agent.
- If a contrast agent is to be used, additional instructions may be given, such as eating and drinking.
Importantly! EasyMed specialists will provide detailed instructions and support at every stage of preparation for CT urography, guaranteeing the comfort and safety of the patient.
CT Urography Process
The CT urography process begins with patients arriving at the medical facility, where they are registered and instructed to prepare for the procedure. Before starting, the patient is advised to remove all clothing, jewelry, and other metal objects. Sometimes, a contrast agent is injected into the patient through an intravenous catheter to visualize the urinary tract better.
After preparation, the patient lies on the CT scanner table, which moves them inside the machine. During the scan, the patient must remain still to obtain clear images. The scan takes between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the complexity of the procedure.
The machine makes characteristic sounds during the scan, but the procedure usually does not cause pain. After the CT urography, the patient can leave the clinic and return to normal activities if their condition allows it. No additional monitoring by the medical staff is required.
CT urography with contrast medium
CT urography with contrast is a valuable method for diagnosing urinary system diseases. Using a contrast agent significantly enhances the visualization of the urinary tract, improving the quality of images and the accuracy of diagnosis.
CT urography with contrast is especially recommended in the following cases:
- Evaluation of Urinary Tract Abnormalities: Effective in detecting congenital or acquired abnormalities in the kidneys and urinary tract structure.
- Diagnosing kidney and urinary tract stones: Contrast helps determine the size, shape, and location of the stones, as well as assess their impact on kidney function.
- Detection of tumors of the urinary system: Contrast enhances the distinction between normal tissues and neoplasms, which helps diagnose tumors of the kidneys, bladder, and other organs of the urinary system.
Importantly! Before a CT urography, you should inform your doctor of allergies, especially iodine-based contrast agents. The contrast agent is usually safe but can cause allergic reactions in rare cases. It is also important to report any kidney problems, as the kidneys excrete the contrast. Drinking more fluids after the procedure is recommended to speed up the elimination of contrast from the body.
Contraindications
Contraindications to computed tomography (CT urography) can be divided into relative and absolute.
Relative contraindications:
- Claustrophobia: Patients with a fear of confined spaces may experience discomfort in the enclosed scanner space.
- Pregnancy: Especially in the first trimester, because of the potential risk to the fetus.
Absolute contraindications:
- There are electronic medical devices, such as pacemakers or neurostimulators, can be damaged when exposed to radiation diagnostics.
- Severe allergy to iodine-containing contrast agents, if any are used in the procedure.
- Severe impaired renal function, as contrast agents are excreted through the kidneys.
Importantly! EasyMed clients will be provided with all the necessary information before the procedure.
Safety of the procedure
CTU, like any other CT, involves ionizing radiation. The dose of radiation depends on the scan area and the procedure parameters. It is usually slightly higher than standard X-rays but lower than with more complex CT scans.
Although KTU is associated with some level of radiation, the health risk is generally rated as low. The benefits of the diagnostic information usually outweigh the potential risks.
The frequency of KTUs is determined individually depending on the medical indications. In cases of monitoring chronic diseases or evaluating the effectiveness of treatment, it may be necessary to repeat the procedure periodically.
Importantly! Patients should discuss all the risks and benefits of CTU with their doctor, as well as possible alternative diagnostic methods. The EasyMed team will guide you through every step of the process, providing information and support to make an informed decision.
