What does EMG show?
Electromyography helps identify the causes of muscle weakness, spasms, and abnormal activity. It is particularly useful in diagnosing neuromuscular disorders, including neuropathies, myopathies, and motor neuron disease.

Preparation for the procedure
Preparation for the electromyography procedure includes several key steps:
- All metal objects, including jewelry, must be removed before the procedure.
- Make sure that the area to be examined is clean and dry. Do not use creams or lotions a few hours before your procedure.
- Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially those that may affect muscle activity.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing to allow easy access to the study area.
- Avoid caffeine and smoking on the day of the EMG, as this can affect the results.
- It is important to relax during the procedure to get the most accurate results.

EMG Process
The EMG procedure begins with preparation. The patient will be asked to remove clothing from the study area and get comfortable. The skin at the site where the electrodes are inserted is cleansed. Small needle electrodes are inserted into the muscles to record their electrical activity.
An EMG usually takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the number of examined muscles. At the end of the recording, the electrodes are removed, and the injection sites are treated with an antiseptic.
After the EMG procedure, the patient can leave the medical facility immediately. No special rest is required after EMG.
Contraindications
- Presence of skin diseases or infections at the electrode insertion sites.
- Severe blood clotting disorders.
- Implanted electronic medical devices (e.g., pacemakers).
- Severe general illnesses or exacerbation of chronic diseases.

Safety of the procedure
Electromyography (EMG) is generally safe and does not cause side effects. There may be temporary pain at the sites where the electrodes or needles are inserted. The risk of infections is minimal.
The frequency of EMG is determined by clinical need, based on diagnosing and monitoring muscle and nerve diseases. A repeat procedure is prescribed depending on the dynamics of the patient’s condition and the need to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
