Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that allows the doctor to examine the inside of the uterus (uterine cavity) using a hysteroscope, a special instrument with a lighting and imaging device. This procedure is used to identify the causes of abnormal bleeding, diagnose and remove polyps and fibroids, and assess the condition of the uterus before planning a pregnancy.

What does a hysteroscopy show?
- Detection and removal of polyps and fibroids that can cause bleeding and infertility.
- Diagnosis of intrauterine synechiae (adhesions), which can be the cause of menstrual irregularities and infertility.
- Detection of abnormalities in the structure of the uterus, such as septums, that can affect pregnancy.
- Assessment of the endometrial condition in case of abnormal bleeding and suspected endometriosis.
Indications for hysteroscopy
- Abnormal uterine bleeding, including heavy or irregular periods.
- Suspicion of intrauterine polyps, fibroids, or adenomyosis.
- Unexplained cases of infertility or recurrent miscarriages.
- The presence of intrauterine synechiae (adhesions) or abnormalities in the structure of the uterus that can affect reproductive health.
- Removal of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) that have moved or become stuck.
- Diagnosis and treatment of intrauterine pathologies, especially if endometrial hyperplasia or endometrial cancer is suspected.
Importantly! A complete medical history, including information about the menstrual cycle, pregnancies, previous medical conditions, and treatments, must be provided before a hysteroscopy. A referral from a doctor helps to determine the specific goals of the examination. It gives a more accurate and targeted diagnosis.
Preparation for the procedure
- It is better to perform hysteroscopy in the first half of the menstrual cycle, after the end of menstruation but before ovulation, to ensure optimal access and visibility of the inner cavity of the uterus.
- It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse 24-48 hours before the procedure.
- Do not use vaginal medications, creams, or suppositories for a few days before the examination.
- It is important to inform your doctor about all your medications, especially those that affect blood clotting.
- Your doctor may order blood tests, ultrasounds, or other tests before your hysteroscopy.
- Tell your doctor about gynecological conditions, allergies, and recent medical procedures.
- Take with you all previously obtained medical documents related to gynecological health.
Importantly! When making an appointment for a hysteroscopy through EasyMed, the manager will provide full information about the preparation for the procedure. This will help ensure diagnostic accuracy and comfort during the examination.
How is a hysteroscopy performed?
The patient is seated in a gynecological chair. Depending on the indications and the patient’s condition, the procedure can be performed under local, spinal, or general anesthesia.
The doctor gently inserts the hysteroscope through the vagina and cervix into the uterine cavity. The hysteroscope has lighting and video devices to transmit the image to the monitor.
The hysteroscopy usually takes 15 to 30 minutes but may last longer if additional manipulations are required, such as removing polyps or fibroids or performing a biopsy.
After the hysteroscopy is completed, the patient remains under observation until she fully wakes up from anesthesia, after which she can leave the clinic.
After the procedure, the doctor will discuss the initial findings and next steps with the patient, including waiting for the biopsy results, if any. The results of the biopsy are usually available within a few days. Some discomfort or spotting may occur for a few days after the procedure.
Contraindications to the procedure
- Acute pelvic inflammatory disease: The presence of active infections in the uterus or appendages may increase the risk of complications during and after the procedure.
- Severe cardiovascular disease: Especially if general anesthesia is to be used, as this can increase the risks associated with anesthesia.
- Pregnancy: Hysteroscopy during pregnancy is contraindicated as it can harm the fetus.
- Severe coagulopathies (bleeding disorders): Increase the risk of bleeding during and after the procedure.
- Recent uterine or pelvic surgery: A recovery period must be observed before a hysteroscopy is performed.
- Acute inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract: May be aggravated during the procedure.
Importantly! When making an appointment for a hysteroscopy through EasyMed, the manager will inform the client about all the contraindications and help determine whether this procedure suits a particular case. It is important to provide a complete medical history and discuss all potential risks with your doctor before a hysteroscopy.
Safety of the procedure
Hysteroscopy is considered a safe and effective procedure for diagnosing and treating various diseases of the uterus.
However, there are some risks during the procedure:
- Minor bleeding or spotting after the procedure.
- There is a possibility of infection, although this is rare.
- In very rare cases, injuries to the uterus or cervix.
The procedure is usually performed under local, spinal, or general anesthesia, which also comes with the usual risks inherent in any anesthesia.
The frequency of hysteroscopy is determined individually based on medical indications, such as abnormal uterine bleeding, the need to remove polyps or fibroids, and in cases of undiagnosed infertility. The procedure is not intended to be performed regularly or routinely without specific medical indications.
