What does a prostate check show?
- Detection of signs of prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement), which can cause difficulty urinating.
- Detection of inflammatory processes and infections of the prostate.
- Early detection of prostate cancer, especially with elevated PSA values.
- Prostate monitoring in men receiving treatment for prostate disease.
Indications for a prostate examination
- In the presence of symptoms that indicate prostate problems, such as difficulty or frequent urination, pelvic pain, and erectile dysfunction.
- As part of a regular medical check-up for men over 50 years of age and for men at high risk of developing prostate cancer over 40 years of age.
- If you have risk factors for prostate cancer, including family history, heredity, etc.
- To monitor the condition of men who have previously been diagnosed with prostate disease.
Importantly! Before having a prostate check, a man should be provided with a complete medical history, including any previous medical conditions, current symptoms, and medications he is taking. A referral from your doctor will help determine the most appropriate tests, such as a PSA blood test or rectal digital exam. It will provide a more accurate assessment of the prostate condition, as well as planning follow-up treatment.
Preparation for the procedure
- It is recommended to abstain from sexual intercourse and ejaculation for 24-48 hours before the procedure, especially before a PSA blood test.
- Strenuous exercise, cycling, and horseback riding should be avoided 24-48 hours before the examination.
- It's important to notify your doctor of any medications you're taking, including prostate supplements, anticoagulants, and aspirin.
- Inform your doctor about any medical conditions and medical procedures related to the prostate.
- In some cases, your doctor may recommend an enema before your rectal exam.
Importantly! When making an appointment for a prostate check through EasyMed, the manager will provide full information about the preparation for the procedure, including detailed instructions and recommendations. This will help ensure the patient’s most accurate examination results and convenience.
How is a prostate check-up performed?
Initially, there is a consultation with a doctor, during which the patient talks about his symptoms and medical history.
Next, the doctor inserts a finger glove and a gel-lubricated finger into the patient’s rectum to palpate the prostate. This quick test helps assess prostate lumps’ size, consistency, and presence.
Next, the patient may be prescribed a blood test to measure PSA levels, which helps to detect signs of prostate cancer.
In some cases, transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) may be performed to obtain images of the prostate.
A rectal exam takes only a few minutes. Blood tests and ultrasounds are also relatively quick procedures, each taking 15-30 minutes.
After completing all the check stages, the patient can leave the clinic. Test results should be ready within a few days.
A prostate examination is an important procedure for the early detection of prostate diseases, including cancer. Regular check-ups are recommended for men over the age of 50 or earlier for those who are at higher risk.
