Ultrasound scan
Ultrasound (US) is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that uses ultrasound waves to create images of the body's internal structures. Ultrasound helps to see the condition of various organs, tissues, and vessels without surgery or ionizing radiation, as in X-rays or CT scans.

Indications for ultrasound
- Aches and pains: Unexplained pain or discomfort in any part of the body, especially in the abdomen, neck, chest, or pelvis.
- Swelling and enlargements: Visible swelling or enlargement of organs, which may indicate the presence of pathologies.
- Suspicion of internal pathologies: In case of suspicion of kidney or gallbladder stones, tumors, cysts, or abnormalities in the development of organs.
- Cardiovascular disease: Echocardiography to assess the functioning of the heart and blood vessels.
- Chronic Disease Monitoring: Assessment of the status and progression of diseases such as liver disease, kidney disease, and chronic pancreatitis.
- Pregnancy evaluation: Monitoring fetal health, amniotic fluid, and other aspects of pregnancy.
Ultrasound is often used as a preventive diagnosis for the timely detection of pathologies.
Important! A complete medical history and a referral from your doctor will help guide the ultrasound specialist to specific areas or structures. The referral may also include questions or comments the doctor wants answered through the ultrasound. Information about medical history, previous surgeries, symptoms, and medications taken contributes to a more accurate interpretation of the results.
Preparation and performance of ultrasound
Preparation for an ultrasound scan depends on the type of examination and the area being examined. For example, for an abdominal ultrasound, it is recommended to abstain from eating and drinking 6-8 hours before the procedure to avoid gas, which can interfere with the acquisition of clear images. In the case of a pelvic ultrasound, on the other hand, a full bladder may be required, which means drinking plenty of water an hour before the examination and refraining from urination.
Important! An EasyMed specialist will additionally notify the patient of the necessary actions and restrictions before the procedure before the ultrasound.
The ultrasound procedure itself usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes, although the time may vary depending on the specific examination. During the process, the patient lies on a couch. The doctor applies a special gel to the skin of the examined area, which helps the ultrasound waves better penetrate the body’s tissues and be reflected back to the transducer. The doctor then moves the transducer across the skin, visualizing the internal organs on a monitor.
Particular attention is paid to the area being examined, the doctor may ask the patient to change position or hold their breath for better visualization.
Ultrasound is a painless procedure; once completed, the patient can return to normal activities.
Diagnostic capabilities of ultrasound
Ultrasound is a multifunctional diagnostic tool. It is used to diagnose a variety of conditions and diseases, including:
- Diseases of the abdominal cavity: Ultrasound allows you to assess the condition of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys, detecting conditions such as stones, cysts, tumors, inflammatory processes and other pathologies.
- Cardiovascular diseases: Echocardiography, a type of ultrasound used to evaluate the heart, can diagnose heart defects, valvular disease, heart rhythm disorders, and other cardiac pathologies.
- Gynecological and urological problems: Ultrasound is used to evaluate the pelvic organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and prostate, helping to identify cysts, fibroids, inflammatory processes, and other abnormalities.
- Pregnancy: Ultrasound is a key method for monitoring fetal development, determining the gestational age, detecting multiple pregnancies and diagnosing possible fetal abnormalities.
- Diseases of the thyroid gland and other soft tissues: Ultrasound can detect nodules, cysts and other abnormalities in the thyroid gland, as well as in the body's soft tissues.
- Musculoskeletal diseases: Ultrasound can be used to assess the condition of joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons, aiding in diagnosing tears, inflammation, and other traumatic injuries.
Contraindications to ultrasound
Ultrasound is a safe and widely used diagnostic method, but there are certain limitations and contraindications for its implementation:
- Skin lesions: Inflammation, infection, or open wounds in the area of the intended ultrasound may interfere with the ultrasound. This is due to the possible spread of infection or increased pain when the ultrasound transducer comes into contact with the affected skin.
- Postoperative period: The ultrasound procedure can be difficult after surgery, especially in cases where the operations were performed in the peritoneum or on the skin, due to pain, swelling, or the presence of sutures and bandages.
- Severe general condition of the patient: In cases where the patient is in a serious illness, unable to assume the necessary position for the examination, or is in intensive care, the performance of ultrasound may be difficult or even impossible.
- Limited patient mobility: The patient's inability to assume the required posture or lie down on the couch for the ultrasound may be an obstacle to this examination.
