Soft tissue ultrasound
Soft tissue ultrasound (soft tissue ultrasound) is a safe and informative diagnostic method based on the use of high-frequency sound waves to obtain detailed images of the structure of the body's soft tissues. This method allows you to monitor the condition of organs and systems without the need for surgery, and also does not involve the effect of ionizing radiation on the body, unlike other imaging methods such as X-rays or CT scan.

Ultrasound of soft tissues with EasyMed
Indications for soft tissue ultrasound
- Determination of the nature of the lesions: Helps to identify cysts, tumors and other neoplasms
- Soft tissue injuries: To diagnose tears, hematomas, inflammations
- Inflammation: Identify signs of inflammation in soft tissues
This diagnostic method is particularly valuable because of its safety, affordability, and ability to provide detailed soft tissue images without the use of ionizing radiation. Soft tissue ultrasound is widely used in medical practice to quickly and accurately diagnose various conditions.
Sometimes, in addition to ultrasound diagnostics, additional tests may be prescribed, for example, biopsy, MRI, and others.
Importantly! If available, it is necessary to provide the ultrasound specialist with a medical history and a referral for diagnosis from the attending physician. This will allow for a more accurate interpretation of the results.
Preparation for the procedure
- Informing the doctor: Inform the ultrasound specialist about all medical conditions, allergies, and medications you are taking.
- Adherence to dietary recommendations: In most cases, there are no strict dietary restrictions before a soft tissue ultrasound. However, if the test is performed in the abdominal area, the doctor may give special instructions.
- Reduced physical activity: If an ultrasound is ordered after an injury, it is recommended to avoid putting stress on the injured area before the procedure.
- Choice of clothing: Wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing. This will provide easy access to the area to be examined and help avoid discomfort during the procedure.
Importantly! An EasyMed specialist will additionally notify the patient of the necessary actions and restrictions before the procedure before the ultrasound.
The process of soft tissue ultrasound
- Preparation: The patient may be required to remove clothing depending on the study area and lie down on a couch. The patient's posture is adjusted to provide the best access to the area to be examined.
- Gel application: A special conductive gel is applied to the skin in the area to be examined. The gel is needed to eliminate the air gap between the transducer and the skin, which provides better quality ultrasound images.
- Examination: A doctor or ultrasound specialist moves the transducer over the skin, scanning the area being examined. The transducer emits ultrasound waves that bounce off the tissues and back again, creating an image on the monitor.
- Analysis of the results: The doctor analyzes the images in real time, assessing the structure, density, and other characteristics of the soft tissues, as well as the presence of abnormalities such as tumors, cysts, inflammations, or foreign bodies.
- Completion of the procedure: Once the scan is complete, the gel is removed from the skin.
- Discussion of the results: Preliminary results can be discussed with the patient immediately after the procedure. In some cases, the final report is prepared for later discussion with the treating physician.
Diagnostic Capabilities of Soft Tissue Ultrasound
- Suspected tumors: To diagnose and evaluate the nature of soft tissue neoplasms, including distinguishing between benign and malignant tumors.
- Soft tissue injuries: Evaluation of damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments, and subcutaneous tissue, including tears, inflammation, and swelling.
- Inflammatory processes: Diagnosis of inflammatory diseases of soft tissues, such as phlegmons, abscesses, cellular inflammations.
- Infections: Detection and assessment of the depth and spread of infections in soft tissues.
- Examination of blood vessels: Doppler ultrasound is used to assess the state of blood flow in soft tissues, for example, in varicose veins or thrombosis.
- Evaluation of cysts and hematomas: Determination of the presence, size, and content of cysts or hematomas in soft tissues.
- Foreign body detection: Ultrasound is used to look for foreign bodies, especially those that are not visible on X-rays.
- Preparation for surgery: Ultrasound can be used to plan surgical procedures, including biopsies of soft tissue masses.
Contraindications
- Hard-to-reach areas: Ultrasound may be less effective for examining soft tissues located deep inside the body or behind bone structures.
- Presence of open wounds or burns: Direct use of the ultrasound transducer on open wounds or burn surfaces can be painful for the patient and can potentially lead to infection.
- Skin conditions: Certain skin conditions, especially those that lead to ulcers or wounds, can make it difficult to perform an ultrasound due to pain or discomfort when in contact with the transducer.
- Excessive sensitivity or allergy to the ultrasound gel: Although rare, some people may experience an allergic reaction to the gel used during the procedure.
- Patients with limited mobility or severe chronic diseases: In these cases, special preparation or modification of the standard ultrasound procedure may be required.
